A Few FAQs

Do you have a children's program?

As we are just getting started, we currently do not have a formal children's program but are in the planning stages. It is our goal to create spaces in the future where children learn in an environment that helps them connect to faith in a way that welcomes questions and allows for the childlike wonder that comes from God. Children are definitely welcome in our meetings. We have table seating available in our meeting space for families with children to provide space for coloring. Worried that your little ones may fidget or make noise?... don't be. That's what kids do.

What does the tag line, "a church for the rest of us," mean?

It means that we strive to be a church for those who may not feel comfortable in a more traditional church setting, or they have had difficult experiences with church. This is church for all people that are looking for a community of faith that is focused on love, justice, and making a difference in the lives of others.

What if I do not believe in God, am I still welcome?

Yes. There are no requirements for anyone to be a follower of Jesus to attend any of our gatherings. We invite those that are exploring faith to come along for the journey.

What happens during your Sunday Morning Gatherings?

We are a small group right now and our gatherings usually follow the same general format. Come a little early and grab a cup of coffee and donut. We are calling these current gatherings the "Upper Room Sessions" modeled after the first church in the book of acts. The first church met in an Upper Room of to pray together and dream of what the future could hold.

These weekly sessions usually feature a couple of songs, prayer, communion, and a talk about what it looks like to build a church for the rest of us. We are dreaming together of creating a space where all are welcome to explore what it means to follow Jesus together. Sunday morning gatherings are currently available via Facebook Live, by visiting our Facebook page at facebook.com/newjourneyva.

Are you affiliated with a denomination?

No. The best way to describe us is that we are non-denominational. However, another word you could use is inter-denominational, meaning we have people that come from all kinds of church backgrounds and some with no church background at all.

Is this church primarily for the LGBTQIA+ Community?

No. We are a church for all. We are an affirming church which means we don't just say folks in the LGBTQIA+ community can attend, they are fully welcomed into the full life of the church. New Journey is made up of a small group right now, but in this small group we have great diversity; LGBTQIA+ & heterosexual, old & young, married & single, born in the United States & born in a different country, etc. While our pastor is a married gay man, it is our collective desire to be a beautiful tapestry of people from all walks of life, doing faith together.
