Sunday Morning Gatherings

New Journey starts regular Sunday Morning gatherings in Gainesville on April 20, Easter Sunday, 2025.  We are a small group of people who are on a journey together to create a church for the rest of us!  Learn more about us and what we are doing below and throughout this site.

A Few FAQs

Do you have a children's program?

As we are just getting started, we currently do not have a formal children's program but are in the planning stages for starting one this fall. It is our goal to create spaces where children learn in an environment that helps them connect to faith in a way that welcomes questions and allows for the childlike wonder that comes from God. Children are definitely welcome in our meetings. We have table seating available in our meeting space for families with children to provide space for coloring. Worried that your little ones may fidget or make noise?... don't. That's what kids do.

What does the tag line, "a church for the rest of us," mean?

It means that we are building a church for those who may not feel comfortable in a more traditional church setting or they have had difficult experiences with church. This is church for all people that are looking for a community of faith that is focused on love, justice, and making a difference in the lives of others.

What if I do not believe in God, am I still welcome?

Yes. There are no requirements for anyone to be a follower of Jesus to attend any of our gatherings.  We invite those that are exploring faith to come along for the journey.

What happens during your Sunday Morning Gatherings?

We are a small group right now and our gatherings usually follow the same general format. Come a little early and grab a cup of coffee and donut. At 10 am, we start with a welcome and announcements of anything that folks may want to know about, like opportunities to serve others, events, etc. We then sing a couple of songs. Someone will pray for our offering and sing another song while those who call New Journey their church who want to give something to the work of the ministry can do so as offering bags are passed. Attendees can also fill out a connect card with prayer requests and place those in the offering bags where people will pray for those needs.

After the offering and song, a message will be given. Messages last about 30 minutes, are designed to be relatable, and welcome individuals to consider what following Jesus looks like in their individual contexts while also being lived out in community with others. The message is followed with Communion (we pass out small individually sealed Communion cups with wafers and juice). There is a closing song and then a Benediction (final blessing).  The entire service lasts about an hour and is also available via Facebook Live, by visiting our Facebook page at facebook.com/newjourneyva.

Are you affiliated with a denomination?

No. We are a church of people following the Jesus of the gospels, which a message that transforms lives and calls us to make a difference in the lives of those around us, especially those who feel as if they have no voice in our society. The best way to describe us is that we are non-denominational. However, another word you could use in inter-denominational, which means we have people that come from all kinds of church backgrounds and some with no church background at all.

Is this church is primarily for the LGBTQIA+ Community?

No. We are a church for all.  We are an affirming church which means we don't just say folks in the LGBTQIA+ community can attend, they are fully welcomed into the full life of the church.  New Journey is made up of a small group right now, but in this small group we have great diversity; LGBTQIA+ & heterosexual, old & young, married & single, born in the United States & born in a different country, etc. While our pastor is a married gay man, it is our collective desire to be a beautiful tapestry of people from all walks of life, doing faith together.
